We are the Maquis. An Alliance of planets forged from the oppression of the Federation. An oppression that started with the Federation-Cardassian Treaty of 2370. A treaty that should never have been written.

When small border skirmishes escalated between the Maquis and The Cardassian Union, the Federation turned their backs on us. When they unleashed all out genocide on us, the Federation joined in.

Their efforts to purge the DMZ of the Maquis stirred a deep moral controversy. At least one Federation Captain even began covertly assisting the Maquis. The Federation responded harshly using demotion or imprisonment to remove anyone who spoke against policy. Public outrage pressured the UFP president to act but as he attempted to revoke the treaty, a coup ended his authority and nearly cost him his life .

As the Federation became an oppressive regiem, several Captains left, including Jean Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise-E. Soon after, members of the UFP also withdraw sending two quadrants into the chaos of civil war -- war still being fought, 9-years later.
